EU as a symbolic power

Time: 09.35–10.20, Amfin

The discussion will address how the European Union functions as a symbol of democracy, prosperity, and political aspiration in countries with authoritarian tendencies. Drawing on Georgia and Serbia, we will examine how young people and protest movements invoke the EU as a reference point in their efforts toward democratic change. We will also consider whether the EU is taking on a symbolic role that the United States has occupied until recently. The panel brings together academics and practitioners with first-hand experience of these dynamics.

Demokratisamtal: unga i dialog med Europa-parlamentariker (in Swedish)

Time: 11.00–11.45, Amfi

EU Acting Under Pressure: What happens to Democratic Control, Accountability and Legislative Quality?

Time: 11.50–12.35, Concert Hall

EU Acting Under Pressure: What happens to Democratic Control, Accountability and Legislative Quality?
The Union now faces significant geopolitical and economic pressure from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Middle East instability. Internally, difficulties in achieving unanimity in the European Council on strategic issues challenge EU’s capacity to act decisively. These pressures are compounded by concerns over declining European competitiveness and a political call for reduced regulatory burden and legislative simplification. This seminar explores how these pressures are shaping the quality of EU legislation and the possibility for democratic control and accountability.

(in Swedish)

Time: 12.40-13.25, Concert Hall
