Gröna skolgårdsprojekt 2024 – Outdoor classroom
We created an outdoor classroom to increase and improve our outdoor learning.
The classroom can be used as shelter in case of tough weather for outdoor learning sessions. It can also be used as a cozy space to rest, read stories, for role play or quiet play.
The shape of the building also allows us to use it as a stage as we often create shows: theatre, dance or singing performances, and invite other classes or families to watch the shows.

The whole project involved different students and children from ISLK (preschool and middle school) and Vipan gymnasium.
The first collaboration was between the children in preschool and the middle school students in ISLK. Inspired by the preschool children's wishes, the MYP4 (Åk 8) students designed, using sketches and models, possible constructions.
After the MYP4 presentations, using the feedback from the Vipan students and preschoolers, a final model was designed.
Some of the designs created by the MYP4 students.
The Vipan students built the foundations, structure and roof of the building. The preschool children then got involved to screw the wooden planks on the walls and fences.

The whole experience was very positive. The collaboration between the different programmes of the school and between ISLK and Vipan gymnasium was very interesting and extremely fruitful.
The timeline was a little bit tight as we could not start the different collaborations before the end of August. However, the weather has been good this fall so we could manage in time.
Some staff members from the other programmes in ISLK have been very enthusiastic about the project and results. It created a better collaboration between the staff members involved but also inspired some colleagues to collaborate more with the preschool so their students can also enjoy the facilities.
All the money was used for material. The Vipan students build the foundation and structure of the building.
The last stage would be to build the slide on the roof. The Vipan students would build the base, and a contractor would come to glue the metal sheet on it.
We intended to also develop our outdoor space with sustainable (using rain water) water play amenities. Unfortunately, we did not have time to develop that aspect and wish to continue later on. We feel it is important as children love to play with water and wish to have water in the sand pit.
